Local airline officials said that the reports on social media that Mandalay-based domestic flights have been suspended are not true.

Rumours have spread that flights to and from Mandalay have been canceled this week.

Five domestic airlines such as Myanmar National Airlines, Myanmar Airways International, Mingalar Aviation Services, Air Thanlwin and Mann Yadanarpon Airlines, operate regular flights based in Yangon and Mandalay.

Regarding the news, Captain Khup Khan Mung, the CEO of Myanmar National Airlines, told The Daily Eleven newspaper at around 8 pm on August 9, “Our airlines has kept two ATR aircrafts overnight in Mandalay and is flying regular domestic flights based on Mandalay. Currently, we are flying regularly without any cancellations.”

An official from Myanmar Airways International and Mingalar Aviation Services, which operates flights to eight major cities based in Mandalay, told The Daily Eleven newspaper at around 8 pm on August 9, "Currently, there are no significant changes in flights. The flight schedule is operating normally. As there is any change we made, we will issue timely notifications through our airline's official page and media channels. Myanmar Airways International and Mingalar Aviation Services operate Yangon-Mandalay flights twice a day from Mandalay to eight major cities.”

Currently, there are rumours that fighting will take place in PyinOoLwin and Mandalay. Residents of PyinOoLwin are moving around as usual, but people living temporary in PyinOoLwin have moved, and on August 8, traffic jams occurred at the 16-mile gate from PyinOoLwin to Mandalay.

Then, on August 9, there were rumours again that the flights to Mandalay were canceled, and on the other hand, the price of the dollar was raised along with the rumors, a businessman from Mandalay said.

A businessman from Mandalay said “As the news spread that there was going to be a fight in Mandalay and PyinOoLwin, depending on the news, Mandalay-centered flights were suspended until August 17. Some people spread the rumours on purpose, and today they are saying that the price is around 6,000 kyats per dollar, which is an unfairly inflated price. After creating these rumours, we see people who are doing the bidding. All of these should be careful. In the city of Mandalay, people are moving around as usual. I know that the airlines are running normally.”
