Published 24 July 2024

Due to the closure of the New Asia Road and the difficulty of traveling over Dawna Taungkyaw Road, the volume of trade from the Myawady border has decreased by eight times.

Dawna Taungkyaw Road, a key trade route from Myawady to Thailand, has been closed since early December 2023. Alternative routes like Htoekawtkoe Road, Kyat U Taung Road, and Road 1018, which serve as parts of Dawna Taungkyaw Road, are inaccessible during the rainy season due to thick mud, causing significant delays in transportation and travel.

As a result, from April 1 to July 12 of the new financial year 2024, only $32.542 million worth of goods were traded from Myawady to Thailand. This is a stark decrease from the $161.983 million traded during the same period last year, amounting to a reduction of $129.441 million.

Regarding imports of Thai products into the domestic market, only $36.020 million worth of goods were imported from April 1 to July 12, compared to $361.083 million during the same period last year. This marks a decrease of $325.063 million, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Commerce.

During the same period in the previous fiscal year, when the New Asia Road was still open, imports and exports from Myawady totaled $523.066 million. However, this year, only $68.562 million worth of trade was conducted, representing about an eightfold decrease from the previous year.
