Myanmar’s fertilizer imports surge by over 52% in 8 months of current fiscal year

Among the eleven major imports to Myanmar, the country imported over 1.188 million tonnes of fertilizer within the first 8 months of this fiscal year, which is more than 52 percent higher compared to the same period last year, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

From April 1 to December 1, 2023-2024 FY, Myanmar witnessed imports of 1,188,806 tonnes of fertilizer, valued at over US$ 465.85 million. In the corresponding period of the previous year, Myanmar imported 782,330 tonnes of fertilizer, worth over 439.84 million. This represents a significant 52 percent increase in fertilizer imports during the first 8 months of the current fiscal year.

Additionally, Myanmar imported 400,616 tonnes of palm oil, valued at over US$ 393.06 million, along with 271,987 tonnes of wheat grains worth over US$ 107.56 million, and 1,292 tonnes of wheat powder worth over US$ 0.81 million from the agricultural sector.

Furthermore, the country imported 11,277 tonnes of condensed milk (worth over US$ 15.87 million), 12,004 tonnes of tin evaporated milk (worth over US$ 17.75 million), and 7,081 tonnes of milk powder (worth over US$ 20.03 million).

According to data collected by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, Myanmar’s total fertilizer imports during the period from April 1 to December 1, 2023 amounted to 1,136,471 tonnes. The overall trade volume for Myanmar from April to March 31, 2022-2023 FY reached US$ 33.925 billion, compared to US$ 30.351 billion in the same period of the previous year.

Myanmar’s primary exports include agricultural products, animal and marine products, mineral products, forestry products, and manufactured goods. On the other hand, the country mainly imports fuel, vegetable oil, vehicles, pharmaceutical products, construction equipment, polymers, tires, and machinery CMP raw materials.
