Landmine explosions claim 20 casualties in Mon State in 2023

Mon State witnessed a series of landmine explosions in 2023 that killed seven locals and injured 13 others in different townships.

The blasts occurred mostly along the Yangon-Mawlamyine road and near the suspension bridge in Baykalwe village, where security troops were stationed. The landmine victims included four children and two women, who lost their lives or limbs due to the explosions.

According to a report by Landmine & Cluster Munition Monitor (LCMM), more than half of Myanmar’s townships are affected by the landmine threat, which poses a serious risk to the safety and livelihoods of civilians.

The report documented several cases of landmine casualties among civilian adults and children in 2023.
