Gold shop and gas station in Mawlamyine targeted by bomb extortionists

Two businesses in Mawlamyine, Mon State, have received threats of bombing unless they pay ransom money to anonymous callers.

Htet Theingi Kyaw gold shop on Baho Road, Sitkegon Ward, received a phone message on January 5, demanding 3 million kyats to be transferred via Wave Money to a specified number. The message claimed that a bomb had been planted near the shop the previous night. The gold shop owner reported the incident to the authorities, who are investigating the case.

A similar threat was made to the manager of Denko gas station on December 20, 2023. The gas station, located at the corner of Baho Road and Mingyi Bridge Road, near the gold shop and the Mon State Government Office, was asked to pay 5 million kyats or face a bomb attack. The manager also alerted the police about the call.

No bombs have been found or detonated at either location so far. The motive and identity of the extortionists are unknown.
