Over 35,000 villagers were displaced by the fighting that broke out in Taninthayi Region in August, according to the teams working in support of displaced people.

They also reported that more than 2,000 locals had fled the fighting near Wagone village, in Dawei Township (east) of Tanintharyi region.

Fresh clashes in Longlon, Pulaw and Thayetchaung Township displaced 35,000 villagers and then they can’t return to their homes after the fighting and some villagers currently sheltered at their relatives' homes. 

“There is an urgent need for the displaced villagers because they didn’t do any business. So, they faced shortages of food and accomodation,” said a person who helped the displaced people in Taninthayi region. 

Due to the ongoing fighting in Kawthaung Township, nearly 100 people from Maliwun village had fled to the temporary displaced camps in Thailand. 

As of August 14, 2023, according to the latest figures of the United Nations, the number of internally displaced persons in Myanmar has reached more than 1.9 million, and of these, more than 1.6 million people are those who fled their homes due to the conflict and insecurity that occurred after the political change in February 2021, UNOCHA said in a statement.
