YANGON- A series of bombs went off in the city of Yangon on the Full Moon Day of Waso—which marks the beginning of Buddhist Lent and is considered as one of the holiest day of the year for Buddhists—killing one person and injuring about 10 others, local sources said.

The bomb explosions occurred in the townships of Tamwe, Hlaingthayar and Sanchaung on the morning and afternoon of July 12. In the afternoon, a bomb was found at the corner of Banya Dala Road and Aung Mingalar Street in Tamwe Township.

Security forces arrived at the scene, blocked the area and cleared the bomb by detonating it, local residents reported.

“A garbage man employed by YCDC (Yangon City Development Committee) found a parcel in a YCDC roadside dustbin. Inside was a fire extinguisher. As they discovered that it was a bomb, security forces arrived hurriedly and detonated it,” said a nearby resident.

The security forces detonated the bomb after surrounding it car tires, bags of sand and dustbins. Windowpanes of some flats were reportedly shattered due to a loud explosion.

BBC News quoted an urban guerilla force which claims that they planted the bomb but withdrew from detonating it.

Similarly, Khit Thit Media which usually report news about PDF (People’s Defense Force) also reported that the bomb was planted in a place where military trucks are regularly parked but the mission was cancelled as garbage boys were around when the trucks arrived.

A bomb exploded in the park beside Yangon-Nyaungdon Road in Ward-2 of Hlaingthayar Township at about 2pm on July 12. Two people were reportedly wounded. Another bomb went off near the park below Myaynigon overpass in Sanchaung Township in the afternoon leaving some people injured. However, details about these two bomb blasts were still unknown and security forces arrived there for checks.
