The central executive committee of the National League for Democracy (NLD) issued a statement on February 10 urging responsible officials to take immediate measures to further stop violent crackdown on unarmed civilians.

After a military coup on February 1, Myanmar people have staged peaceful protests in various regions and states. Firing water cannons at the peaceful protestors in Nay Pyi Taw on February 8 left many injured, the statement says.

Again on February 9, police fired water cannons and shot at the protestors near Thabyegon roundabout in Nay Pyi Taw. Two protestors were seriously wounded and one remains in critical condition, the statement points out.

The NLD’s CEC also pointed out the violent attacks on the protestors in Mandalay on February 9 such as water cannon firing, using tear gas, beating and making arrests.

Such incidents show that armed people have brutally cracked down on the innocent, unarmed people, and the NLD categorically denounces such acts. Therefore, responsible officials are strongly urged to prompt action to further stop brutal crackdowns, the statement says.
