Yangon-Myanmar Railways (MR) plans to reduce the number of express train coaches though it has not suspended the express train services yet.

On 28 March, the MR reduced four train coaches of Yangon-Mawlamyine (89-uptrain)—two for the upper class and two for  the ordinary class.

Currently, the MR runs three express trains to Mandalay, two to Mawlamyine and one each to Pyay and Bagan via Yangon every day.

The number of train passengers was 3,297 on 25 March, 2,794 on 26 March, 2,203 on 17 March and 1,883 on 28 March.

The MR has yet to reduce the number of train coaches for Pyay mail train and Tharrawaw train schedules as both trains have at least 541 passengers and at most 976.

Due to the declining number of train passengers, the MR has temporarily suspended 68 out of 168 circular trains since 29 March, said an official of the MR.

As a measure to prevent the spreading of COVID-19, the MR is paying special attention to temperature screening, hand washing and disinfection at Yangon Railways Station.
