Workers going on hunger strike from Pacific Steel Factory in Myaungdagar Industrial Zone in Hmawby Township, Yangon Region, called on the National League for Democracy headquarters on March 4 to seek help for meeting their demands.
In meeting with the local and foreign labor affairs committee, the workers asked for help to resolve their difficulties.
They opened a protest camp on February 13 making an 8-point demand.
The workers turned their protest into a hunger strike on February 20 as their demand was not met yet.
“We have started a hunger strike since February 20. We met and sought coordination with township departmental officials. But they told us to resign. They said they would help us to receive compensation if we quit our jobs. We were ill-treated. So helplessly, we go on a hunger strike. Four were hospitalized. We have been on hunger strike for about 12 days,” said lead worker protestor Myat Min.
The major points the workers have demanded are remaking of employment contracts, paying full salary and ensuring that the workers are repaid full salaries as they have not been paid full.
Party officials promised the workers to present the matter to Yangon Region Minister for Immigration and Human Resources Moe Moe Su Kyi.
