Till January 17 this year, the Ministry of Electricity and Energy started distributing power to 1,091 villages that were included in the first phase of the National Electrification Plan (NEP), said Union Minister for Electricity and Energy Win Khaing.
The first phase of the NEP is being implemented with a loan of 310 million US dollars from the World Bank for power distribution to 5,080 villages within a two-mile radius of national power grid. Under the NEP, construction works in 1,891 villages were completed.
On January 21, the Ministry signed an agreement with Hitachi Soe Electric and Machinery Co., Ltd which won a tender for the purchase of transformers for the villages included in the second phase of NEP.
Upon completion of the first phase, around 626,757 households in 5,080 villages will have electricity access. The second phase will electrify 4,700 villages within a five-mile radius of power grid.
Till August of 2019, 5,066,842 out of 10,877,832 households have electricity access, accounting for 46.58 per cent.
The electricity access by households are: 60.16 per cent in Kachin, 94.75 per cent in Kayah, 32.69 per cent in Kayin, 26.55 per cent in Chin, 41.76 per cent in Sagaing, 18.57 per cent in Taninthayi, 45.83 per cent in Bago (east), 39.02 per cent in Bago (west), 55.34 per cent in Mon, 25.17 per cent in Rakhine, 45.76 per cent in Shan (south), 33.57 per cent in Shan (north), 13.41 per cent in Shan (east), 19.01 per cent in Ayeyawady, 58.08 per cent in Nay Pyi Taw, 87.76 per cent in Yangon and 63.52 per cent in Mandalay.
