The government has promised that the private print media should not seek overseas assistance despite the decline and that it will provide necessary assistance to them, said U Ohn Kyaing, Chair of Myanmar Press Council, at a discussion on the sustainable development of print media, at the MPC office in Yangon, on December 22.
“The MPC had a talk with the State Counsellor on whether print and private media should accept overseas assistance and whether the government will take responsibility for it. The State Counsellor suggested that they should not take oversea assistance and promised that the government would provide necessary assistance as much as it can. This decision was reached at the meeting of four pillars in Nay Pyi Taw on April 30. The meeting of four pillars was held according to the objective of the Printing and Publishing Law after the incumbent government took office, he added.
The meeting organized by the Ministry of Information was attended by the representatives from the MPs, the governmental officials, and Tatmadaw.
The fact that cooperation will be made between the Myanmar Press Council and the Ministry of Information for the sustainable development of print media, was also discussed at the meeting. The MPC is to lead the implementation of that point for the print media. The print media’s difficulties and necessities are to be decided at this meeting, U Ohn Kyaing continued.
U Myint Kyaw, Joint Secretary-1 of the MPC said: “Some print media have stopped over the previous years and recent days. News journals and a newspaper have stopped its publication over the recent month. These are the factors that lead to the holding of this discussion. The news media which are engaging in the daily works may know better than us.”
