The number of eligible voters for the 2020 General Election will reach around 39 million, up five million compared with 34 million eligible voters in 2015 General Election, said Myint Naing, Spokesperson of the Union Election Commission (UEC).

This number does not include those from the army (Tatmadaw) and their family members. The UEC will make updates to the lists every month. The UEC will release the lists of eligible voters twice before the election. The UEC compiled the lists of eligible voters from July to September nationwide.

Htin Kyaw, Chair of Shan State Election Sub-Commission said: “The sub-commission has completed the compilation of eligible voters lists. We will compile the lists of eligible voters from the army only when The UEC gives additional directive. We cannot make updates as the figures from the army are unstable.

The UEC carried out the compilation of eligible voters lists, in cooperation with relevant region and state election sub-commissions, General Administration Department and Immigration Department.

The Immigration Department re-scrutinized the population figures collected by the Immigration Department. After that, the relevant region and state election sub-commission compiled the lists using these figures.

The UEC announced that the 2020 General Election will be held later this year.

The coordination meeting between the UEC and election sub-commissions is being held at Grand Amara Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw, from October 7 to 10.
