Youths urged to cooperate in prevention against spread of hate speeches and fake news

Yangon--U Myint Naing, a member of the Union Election Commission (UEC) has called on youths to cooperate in the prevention against the spread of hate speeches and fake news in the 2020 general election, at a first meeting with youths.

The UEC held a meeting with youths who will cast their votes for the first time, in Yangon on 1 January.

Currently, the number of social media users becomes high. Hate speeches and fake news are circulating on the social media.

“Personal attacks circulated on social media severely damage the democratic processes. All are requested to cooperate in the prevention against the spread of hate speeches and fake news as it may have impacts on the upcoming election, he added.

The UEC will carry out voters education via its facebook during this month. The UEC no longer  uploaded the posts on its official facebook page since 17 November, 2017.

U Min Swe, a member of the UEC said: “The UEC started using its facebook page in December, 2014. Since 17 November, 2017, the UEC has stopped using its facebook as it has no social media team and aims to avoid the undesirable events.

Now the UEC has formed the supervisory committee and social media monitoring team to ensure the systematic use of social media, he added.

The UEC announced its works via its official website: uec.gov.mm when the UEC’s facebook was inactive.
