Yangon University professor arrested, charged with orchestrating CDM

Action has taken against a leading participant in the civil disobedience movement (CDM), Professor Dr Arkar Moe Thu from the department of oriental studies of Yangon University, while 14 other professors and lecturers have been exposed as accomplices, Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) announced at its 8pm news hour on March 8.    

Dr Arkar Moe Thu, who led the strike joined by teachers and staff members from various universities at the so-called CDM compound on the corner of Parami Road and Mindhama Road in Hline Township on March 2. He was arrested and a case has been opened against him at Dagon Myothit (North) Police Station under Section 505 (a) of the penal code of Myanmar. 

The professor formed a CDM supporting committee with six other professors on February 12 as well as several other teams for fundraising, information, record and fact making and technical and legal advisory with 15 professors and lecturers from Yangon Eastern University, Dagon University and University of Distance Education. They then launched the CDM. 

Continued measures are being taken to arrest and take action against 14 other professors and lecturers, MRTV announced.  

Moreover, Min Thu, ex-member of Nay Pyi Taw Development Committee, was arrested at Shwe Gone Dine Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw Hotel Zone on February 26 for encouraging civil servants from the Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, according to the MRTV news. 

Three persons including Min Thu were arrested after being accused of controlling routes for the movement of protesters and inciting more protests. They are facing lawsuits under Section 505 (a) at the police stations concerned in Pobbathiri and Lewe townships, MRTV announced.
