Authorities in Yangon have announced that KTV lounges, restaurants and bars will not be allowed to host live band performances unless they comply with official regulations.

Starting from May 13, joint inspection teams comprising police officers and administrative officials have been conducting checks in townships across Yangon Region. Venues found to be operating without meeting the required regulations are being prohibited from arranging live music performances.

“A regional order has already been issued about a week ago. Since some venues have shown weak compliance, inspections began yesterday. Authorities are checking whether bars, KTVs and restaurants are following the prescribed rules. Incidents of fights and disturbances are also being monitored,” an official from the Yangon Region Police Force said.

At the same time, several live bands in Yangon have announced on social media that they are temporarily suspending performances.

“One of the bands performing at bars in Yangon posted online that all entertainment programs at venues have been suspended indefinitely,” according to social media statements.

Some bars and restaurants in Yangon are reportedly continuing normal business operations but have temporarily halted live music performances.

“Most venues have suspended live bands for now. They said performances were stopped because the venues do not yet meet the required regulations. Later, they will have to apply in accordance with the rules before being allowed to host live bands again,” a Yangon resident said.

According to reports, bars, KTVs and restaurants in Yangon must apply for permission in line with official regulations before arranging live band performances, and performances are not permitted after 10 p.m.
