According to initial reports from the literary community, writer U Tin Nyunt and two others, including his son, have been arrested.
The arrests reportedly took place at around 2 a.m. on April 23 at the writer’s home in Thanlyin Township. He is currently being detained at the Thanlyin police station.
Sources say U Tin Nyunt was arrested in connection with three of his books: “Hkway Htein Nga Tar,” “I Lied to the Generals,” and “U Than Shwe’s Yadaya Rituals.” His son was also detained for publishing these books.
A woman who sold the books through a social media platform has also been arrested. The books in question were originally published in 2017.
U Tin Nyunt has reportedly been charged under Section 505(a), and investigations into the case are ongoing. Further details are expected to be released.
A former schoolteacher with over 20 years of experience, U Tin Nyunt has written and published more than 50 works, including both non-fiction and literary books. One of his works, “Tears That Fell from the Yoma,” was adapted into a film, and actor Myint Myat won an Academy Award for his role in the adaptation.
In 2011, he received a youth literature award from the Tun Foundation for his book “Youth and Ideas.” In 2012, he won political literature awards for “Democracy Paradigm.” In 2017, his book “Memoirs of a Schoolteacher” received the National Literary Award.
