Over 300 workers from World Jin Garment Factory in Padamya Street in Thardukan Industrial Zone in Shwepyitha Township, Yangon Region, are facing financial difficulties after their Koran factory owner has reportedly run away.

The owner told the workers that the factory would close on April 3 and reopen on April 18. However, the factory has not resumed operation yet, the workers said.

“The entrepreneurs said the factory would close temporarily on April 3 and reopen on April 18. We thought that the closure was for Thingyan holidays. But, the factory has not run yet. He has run away. We have learnt that he returned to his country. Now, May is nearly over. We didn’t get our salary even for April,” said one worker Kyaw Lin Oo.

As the factory closed without paying any compensation as per the law, the workers and their families are facing financial difficulties.

“We are in great trouble. I was driven out of my hostel because I could not pay rent. Being unemployed now, our family has difficulty with living conditions. We don’t know when the factory will reopen. The Labour Department didn’t give us any assistance,” Kyaw Lin Oo commented.

Some workers from World Jin Garment Factory went to the Yangon Region Government office in December last year demanding the problems of labour rights violations be solved.
