USDP starts canvassing for votes with portraits of ex-President Thein Sein, Chairman Than Htay

The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) launched election campaigning on September 8 and erected a campaign billboard depicting the portraits of former President Thein Sein and party chairman Than Htay in Tamway Township, Yangon Region.

The political parties due to run for the 2020 general election were allowed to start their election campaigning as of 6 am on September 8.

USDP has fielded 1,129 candidates saying that they will not be competing in 27 constituencies as the party has sought negotiation from ethnic parties, according to a press conference held at the USDP Headquarters in Nay Pyi Taw on August 18.

Among those candidates are 88 retired military officers and 14 former ministers.

Also among them are 495 who stood for the 2010 and 2015 elections. According to the age groups fixed by USDP, 99 candidates age between 25 and 40, 662 age between 41 and 60 and 368 age above 61.
