Lower House MP Thein Tun from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has tabled a motion to the Lower House urging the union government to establish a union level ministry of farmers' affairs.
During a session of the Lower House held in Nay Pyi Taw on September 3, the MP said his proposal aims to enable the government to take systematic measures for granting rights and privileges for farmers and solving their difficulties in terms of agricultural and livestock development.
"When it comes to the formation of various ministries in Myanmar, we have ministries of labour affairs and ethnic affairs. We also have the ministry agriculture, livestock and irrigation. But it focuses on agricultural technology and production sector. To boost agriculture and livestock, farmers need investment, technology, inputs and market as well as the rights to land ownership, land use, agricultural loans, technology and export of their products. This is why it is necessary to establish a ministry of farmers' affairs," said MP Thein Tun.
He stressed the need for such ministry formation to promote farmers' interest in a practical manner although there are committees related to farmers.
A member of parliament made his discussion in support of the proposal. Then, the parliament approved to discuss the motion.
