The proposal submitted by a parliamentary representative from the opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) calling for the termination of the duty of Lower House Speaker T Khun Myant has been voted down.

The proposal failed through voting after it had been discussed by 24 MPs at the session of Lower House held in Nay Pyi Taw on June 1.

The matter would be dealt with if 287 of 430 MPs who have been sworn in voted for the proposal. Otherwise, it would not be handled, the deputy speaker of Lower House announced.

When voting started, 380 MPs cast their votes. There were 132 votes for and 243 against the proposal, with five abstentions. So, it was failed to be dealt with.

“I hereby announce that there were 132 votes in favour. As at least two thirds of the MPs did not vote for the proposal, we could not deal with it as per the law,” the deputy speaker said.

The proposal calling for the termination of the duty of the Lower House speaker was submitted on May 28 by MP Sai Tun Sein representing USDP.

He said the motion was tabled because of Lower House Speaker T Khun Myant’s actions to violate Section 21 of the Lower House of Parliament Law such as his attempts to amend the constitution and bar USDP MPs from submitting their proposals to parliament.

He added that the proposal calling for termination of the speaker’s duty was signed by 110 Lower House MPs and submitted for his violations of constitutional provisions stipulated in the Lower House of Parliament Law and for his failure to successfully perform his duties entrusted.

Sai Tun Sein said that the speaker also turned down the discussion of important issues in the interest of the public.
