MYITKYINA- Christine Schraner Burgener, the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy to Myanmar arrived in Myitkyina Township, Kachin State yesterday morning.

The visiting special envoy and party together with Soe Aung, Deputy Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement met with the Kachin State Government Committee yesterday morning. Later, they visited Northern Command Headquarter in the evening.

They also planned to inspect the IDPs camps this morning.

“We discussed about peace process with Christine Schraner Burgener and party. Although we, the Kachin State Government Committee, hadn’t exclusively been participating in the peace process, we closely join with the Peace Negotiation Teams in Kachin State. They wanted to help us because they have had many experiences. They also asked about the travel access to the non-government controlled areas. The regional security and border affairs minister said that they didn’t strongly restrict to the travel access. Mainly, we discussed about the peace process,” said Dr Thin Lwin, Regional Social Welfare Minister from Kachin State Government Committee.

The former UN special Rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar Yanghee Lee launched first visit in Kachin State on July 21st and 22nd , 2014 and she had observed IDPs camps and prisons in Myitkyina and Bhamaw Townships. But, she faced torrential rain and landslides which caused the delay of her tour programs.

She secondly arrived in Kachin State on June 24th, 2016 and visited Myitkyina prison, refugee camps of Kachin Baptist Church in Zeelun Ward and jarmai Roman Cartelist Church. She also met with some Kachin social organizations.

Moreover, she made a third visit to Myitkyina Township on January 9th, last year and went to prisons and IDPs camps together with the Kachin State Government Committee.
