The Union Minister for International Cooperation, U Ko Ko Hlaing, and Ms. Danielle Parry, UN Humanitarian Coordinator ad interim and Head of Office ad interim of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), met at the Ministry of International Cooperation in Nay Pyi Taw at 10 am on May 31.
In that meeting, they discussed the matters that UN organizations and subsidiary organizations facilitated the provision of humanitarian assistance to the people affected by the Mocha and that will be able to coordinate and cooperate in order to be effective.
UNOCHA has stated that in order to support the people affected by Cyclone Mocha, there is a need for comprehensive access.
Due to the onset of the monsoon season in Myanmar, UNOCHA said humanitarian organizations are working hard to provide food, water, environmental sanitation and emergency shelter support.
UNOCHA has called for an emergency fund of US$333 million to help the 1.6 million people affected by the storm in northwestern part of Myanmar, some parts of Kachin State and Rakhine State.
Access approval is still awaited in order to carry out large-scale relief distributions, but humanitarian organizations are already providing shelter, water, cleaning aid, basic health care and emergency food in accessible areas, according to UNOCHA.
In addition, in Rakhine State alone, the World Food Program (WFP) has provided food aid for 107,000 people, provided shelter and other relief materials for 7,700 households, and distributed more than 30,000 liters of drinking water, UNOCHA announced.
According to UNOCHA, cash assistance was provided to those affected by the storm in northwest Myanmar to repair shelters and provide hygiene kits and other relief items to 4,500 people.
