Union Minister Dr Win Myat Aye charged under Section 505 (a)

Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye has been charged under Section 505 (a) of the Penal Code of Myanmar, according to the 8pm news programme from the Ministry of Information on February 24. 

The news said a lawsuit had been filed against him for encouraging civil servants in the ongoing civil disobedience movement (CDM). 

The minister was accused of persuading the civil servants of his ministry and departments to join the strike, shirk their duties and participate in the protests by exerting his power and influence he acquired during his service as minister. The case against him was opened at the police station concerned on February 21. 

Section 505 (a) of the penal code stipulates that anyone with intent to cause, or who is likely to cause any officer, soldier, sailor or airman, in the Army, Navy or Air Force to mutiny or otherwise disregard or fail in his duty as such; or shall be punished with imprisonment which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.
