Union Election Commission finally announces 2020 election result, NLD win 396 seats

NAYPYITAW-----Union Election Commission announced the final election result on November 14 evening in which the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) won sweeping victory and obtain than enough seats to form a government.

To form a government, 322 seats were needed and the NLD party gained 396 seats among 498 seats in the upper and lower house.

“According to the seats, Pyuthu Hluttaw can select a vice-president, and Amyothar Hluttaw can select a vice-president. As we can select 2 vice-presidents, the NLD party also has a chance to select a president,” said Dr. Myo Nyunt, a member of the central executive party of NLD.

NLD won 258 seats in Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) and 138 seats in Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) totaling 396 seats.

In the 2015 General Election, NLD won 390 seats and for the 2020 election 396 seats meaning  6 more seats than the previous election. NLD won in some constituencies in Ayeyarwaddy, Bago, Mandalay and Sagaing regions as well as Shan, Kachin and Chin States where they experienced loss in the 2015 election. NLD also won 501 seats in the Regional and State parliaments and 20 ethnic minority seats. IN the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (Union parliament) the opposition party USDP won 33 seats, Shan National League for Democracy (SNLD) won 15 seats, and Rakhine National party won 8 seats.

There are 476 MPs from 13 political parties according to the UEC.

Lahe National development party, Kayan national party, Kayin people’s party, Shan national democratic party, Chin national league for democracy and Lesu national development party won some seats in regional parliament according to UEC. Some world leaders and foreign embassies based in Myanmar issued statements congratulating the NLD party and leader Aung San Suu Kyi. At the same time, USDP objected to the election results and told the election again. But, UEC has rejected the appeal of USDP.

The 2020 General Election is free and fair and more transparent than the 2015 election and if objections were to make, and if they can show concrete evidence, it can be done in accordance with the election law according to Dr. Myo Nyunt.

The 2020 multiparty general elections were the third of its kind held under the terms of the country's 2008 constitution. The new parliament's first regular session is expected to be held within 90 days after the commencement of the general elections.
