The Shwe Min Thar Foundation (Myanmar) has strongly condemned a recent performance by the Aung Zabyu Theatrical Troupe for allegedly mocking persons with disabilities and announced that it will pursue effective action over the incident.

In a statement, the foundation said that video clips currently circulating on TikTok show segments of the troupe’s performance that ridicule disabilities. It noted that such portrayals seriously harm the dignity and psychological well-being of persons with disabilities.

“We strongly condemn these actions. The foundation will continue to take necessary steps to ensure effective action is taken regarding this incident,” the statement said.

The Shwe Min Thar Foundation (Myanmar) is an organization dedicated to supporting persons with disabilities to live independently and enhancing their capabilities and opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Myanmar Motion Picture Organization has also expressed concern over instances in the entertainment sector where persons with disabilities are depicted in a demeaning or mocking manner. The Film Censorship Board has reportedly prohibited performances or scenes that insult or ridicule persons with disabilities.

Film directors, scriptwriters, and actors have been urged to refrain from creating, directing, or performing scenes that demean or mock persons with disabilities.

Commenting on the issue via his Facebook page, U Myat Thu Win, Chairman of the Shwe Min Thar Foundation (Myanmar), said that a mere request would not be sufficient, calling instead for clear directives, a formal apology, and a signed pledge of accountability.
