The opening ceremony of the 2/80 Thread Factory Branch at the Tatmadaw Textile Factory (Meiktila) was held yesterday.

The newly inaugurated facility aims to address the nation’s clothing needs while providing surplus cotton thread to external markets at reasonable prices.

Present at the event were Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC); General Ye Win Oo, SAC’s Joint Secretary; General Nyo Saw, a Council Member; along with union-level dignitaries, union ministers, the chief ministers of Mandalay and Magway regions, senior Tatmadaw officers from the Office of the Commander-in-Chief, and other officials.

During the ceremony, Director Maj-Gen Win Myat of the Ordnance Services reported on the factory’s construction progress to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

The Senior General highlighted the importance of utilizing Myanmar’s cotton textiles in the garment industry and exporting them to reduce foreign currency expenditure and generate foreign exchange revenue.

The Senior General shared that the 2/80 Thread Factory has the capacity to produce 4,840 pounds of thread daily. This output will be used to manufacture essential textiles for the population and provide surplus thread to markets at fair prices.

He noted that the factory currently produces uniforms for Tatmadaw members and other textiles for public use.

With the inauguration of the new factory branch, the Tatmadaw Textile Factory (Meiktila) is now better equipped to produce high-quality threads to meet local demands.

The Senior General emphasized the need for Myanmar to systematically cultivate quality cotton to boost per-acre yields and enhance the production of advanced textiles.

He also stressed the importance of upgrading cotton ginning and textile manufacturing facilities to establish robust cotton-based industries.

The Tatmadaw Textile Factory (Meiktila), established in 1966-67 under an agreement between the governments of Myanmar and China, initially aimed to meet local clothing needs and reduce textile imports.

The facility was handed over to the Directorate of Ordnance Services under the Commander-in-Chief (Army) on October 1, 1991.

Over the years, it has manufactured uniforms for Tatmadaw and Myanmar Police Force personnel, school uniforms, and various other textile products.

The addition of the 2/80 Thread Factory Branch is expected to significantly contribute to the country’s textile industry by providing quality threads.

An official from China Texmatech Co. Ltd formally transferred factory-related documents to the factory manager during the event.

This new facility not only reinforces the Tatmadaw’s self-sufficiency in military apparel production but also bolsters the nation’s capacity to meet civilian textile demands while supporting economic growth through cotton-based industries.
