Representatives of the Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) met in Kunming, China, and reached an agreement on a ceasefire, under which TNLA forces will withdraw from Momeik and Mongmit townships, according to reports.

The ninth round of peace talks between the two sides was held from October 27 to 28 in Kunming, China, with mediation by Mr. Deng Xijun, China’s Special Envoy for Asian Affairs. The Tatmadaw delegation was led by Lieutenant General Ko Ko Oo of the National Solidarity and Peacemaking Negotiation Committee (NSPNC), while the TNLA delegation was headed by Lieutenant General Tar Jot Jar of the PSLF/TNLA, the TNLA announced.

According to the TNLA statement, both sides engaged in mutual discussions and coordination under the mediation of the Chinese special envoy. They agreed that TNLA troops will withdraw from Momeik and Mongmit within the agreed timeframe, while the Tatmadaw will refrain from airstrikes and ground assaults in Ta’ang areas. Starting from October 29, both forces will halt their operations at their respective positions and signed a ceasefire agreement to suspend all hostilities.

The National Defense and Security Council’s Information Team has not yet issued a statement regarding this new agreement.

The TNLA, as part of the Northern Alliance (under the code name “1027 Operation”), had launched coordinated offensives and seized control of several towns, including Namhsan, Mantong, Namtu, Namsan, Momeik, Kyaukme, Hsipaw, Naungcho, and Kutkai.

In response, the Tatmadaw conducted combined ground and air operations to regain control of the occupied towns. The military retook Naungcho on July 16, 2025, Kyaukme on October 1, and Hsipaw on October 17.

Although the Tatmadaw has continued applying military pressure on TNLA-held areas, and airstrikes have been ongoing in other contested towns, this recent ceasefire marks an agreement for TNLA forces to withdraw from Momeik and Mongmit townships.
