Due to a strong depression, heavy rains are expected in Rakhine State, Sagaing Region, and Chin State, which may lead to flooding and landslides, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology has warned.

The strong depression currently located over inland areas of West Bengal, India, is slowly moving west-northwestward and is expected to remain in that area. It may weaken into a low-pressure system within the next 12 hours and continue crossing inland regions of India over the next 36 hours, according to meteorological forecasts.

As a result of this strong depression, from the afternoon of September 16 for the next 24 hours, widespread heavy rain is expected in Rakhine State, and scattered heavy rain in Sagaing Region and Chin State. The coastal areas of Rakhine, river estuaries, and offshore areas may experience occasional gusty winds and moderate to large waves. Wind speeds could reach 30 to 35 miles per hour, while wave heights along the Rakhine coastline, river estuaries, and offshore areas may reach 7 to 9 feet, the meteorology department predicts.

The strong depression may cause natural disasters such as heavy rainfall, strong winds, sudden floods, and landslides. Residents living near highland areas should be cautious of landslides, while those living near rivers and streams should be alert for potential flooding. Domestic flights, as well as coastal and offshore fishing vessels near Rakhine's coastline and river estuaries, have also been advised to take precautionary measures, according to the weather alert.
