State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has assured that enough cash assistance and rations will be provided for Covid-19 preventive and control measures in Rakhine State.

She made the remark during a video conference on the Covid-19 prevention and control in Rakhine State with the state chief minister, head of the State Medical Service and Public Health Department and a volunteer on August 28.

According to Chief Minister Nyi Pu, the stay-at-home announcement in Rakhine State has led to slow commodity flow and a lack of money to run the quarantine sites.

“Rakhine State lacks financial strength. Local people express their concern over this. They are also concerned about whether the outbreak could well be handled,” the chief minister said.

The State Counsellor promised to send necessary food without fail and called for cooperation of other states and regions.

“On behalf of the union government, I dare say the rations will not run out there in Rakhine State,” she said.

She added that the stay-at-home rule in Rakhine State would not mean discrimination as there would be difficulty if nationwide outbreak happened.

She then assured that enough cash assistance would be provided.

“Necessary cash will also be provided. Ours is not a rich country. We don’t  have many resources. However, we always provide assistance for every part of the Union if necessary,” the State Counsellor commented.

The chief minister expressed his belief that the problem could be overcome despite concern over the Covid-19 situation and other issues in Rakhine State.

He said the Union and state governments and the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement had spent Ks16.7 billion on the Covid-19 preventive and control measures in Rakhine State.

Rakhine State alone had seen 207 cases till the morning of August 28.
