State Counsellor visits Kachin State

MYITKYINA- State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi made a one-day trip to Myitkyina Township in Kachin State, yesterday.

She arrived at Myitkyina Airport yesterday morning and paid homage to the Shwe Moe Taung Pagoda near Balaminhtin River Crossing Bridge.

Later, she visited a lansel boarding school for students from the hilly regions, drug rehabilitation center that was funded by Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, St. Joseph and Jarmai IDPs camps and provided donations for them.

“Most of the trip concerns the IDP camps as well as Kachin’s biggest issue that are drugs and related problems. The drug rehabilitation center was handed over to the rehabilitation department. The center was built in order to provide rehabilitation of the mind as well as the physical through vocational trainings. There are about nine drug rehabilitation centers across the nation. Two of the centers belong to the police and the correctional facilities (department). In the past, the State Counsellor Office donated Ks 300 million for the IDPs camps and the cash assistance is also being used for vocational education efforts. For this trip,the donations were made by other ministries so we are not privy to exactly how much,” said Zaw Htay, Director-General of State Counsellor Office who was also accompanied with the State Counsellor.

Suu Kyi attended the launch ceremony together with the children from Lansel Boarding School at the Lonegarpar Shop in Manaw Ground.

The children sang “Hero” and “Let’s build peace” songs in honour of General Aung San and the State Counsellor.

After listening to the songs, she gave a speech and lectured the children.

In the afternoon, she presented documents concerning drug rehabilitation center in Lwekone Ward, Myitkyina Township, donated by Daw Khin Kyi Foundation to the Department of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
