All lawyers have been granted their power of attorney for all charges against State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and she herself has demanded she meet her lawyers.

The State Counsellor appeared at Zabuthiri Township Court via video conferencing on April 26, and her lawyers were granted power of attorney, said advocate Khin Maung Zaw.

Moreover, she demanded to meet her lawyers as they have yet to be allowed though a letter of permission has already been submitted to the organization concerned, Khin Maung Zaw added.

“For their meeting, it is like the court instructed the police. The court cannot do this directly, according to the police manual. It is in accord with the prisons manual. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi herself has made such a demand. She has already asked for this. She asked us lawyers about our attitude. This is the job that must be done without fail. Without any meeting between us, we cannot settle the cases. We must focus on that. This is the right of our defendant. We assume that we must grab this chance for her right,” the lawyer commented.

President Win Myint and Dr Myo Aung were also brought to trial via video conferencing on the same day. Six lawyers for the President submitted their letters to the court for their representatives and so did the lawyer for Dr Myo Aung.

Lawyer Khin Maung Zaw also talked about the health of the President and the State Counsellor.

“Physically seeing him, I think his health is not very bad. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi got a little bit thinner. Her health condition is not that bad either,” he said.

Their next trial is scheduled on May 10 and during the trial, the court will seek police consent for a meeting of the defendants and lawyers.

The State Counsellor is facing several charges at Zabuthiri Township Court: two charges under section 25 of the disaster management law and other charges under section 8 of the export/import law, section 67 of the telecommunications law and section 505 (b) of the penal code. President Win Myint has been charged under section 25 of the disaster management law and section 505 (b) of the penal code.
