State Counsellor attends vote demonstration

NAYPYITAW - In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, State Counsellor Daw Aung Suu Kyi attended the demonstration of voting functions held in the compound of No.5 Basic Education High School in Zabu Thiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw, yesterday.

At the ceremony, she urged the Union Election Commission (UEC) to fulfill detailed requirements of voting.

“The State Counsellor gave a brief. We already prepared the healthcare guidelines for voting day. We also made the State Counsellor’s note so also we are going to hold the voting day under Standard Operation Procedure,” said Khin Maung Oo, Director-General of UEC office.

The demonstration of the voting process was held in two phases. The first phase is held at the No.5 Basic Education High School in Nay Pyi Taw.

Second phase is also held at the No.1 polling station in Yankin Township, Yangon Region.

“We demonstrated the voting process at the No.1 polling station in No.5 Basic Education High School in Nay Pyi Taw. At polling station No.1, the vacant seats are Upper House and Lower House. And then, there are 20,103 eligible voters. So, we are going to carry out the voting process by dividing two groups. Likewise, there are 811 eligible voters in No.1 polling station at Ward No.1 in Yankin Township, Yangon Region where the vacant seats are Upper House, Lower House and Regional parliament. In ethnic parliament, there are two kinds of ethnic such as Kayin and Rakhine,” said Khin Maung Oo.

The UEC is now carrying out an advance voting process for above aged-60 persons living in the areas of Stay-At-Home order. Moreover, UEC is scrutinizing the list of above 60-aged persons in accordance with the law and by-law in the relevant States and Regions.

In the previous General Election, the polling station opened from 6am to 4pm. 

For the General Election-2020, plans are underway to extend the opening time of polling stations until evening. That’s why the UEC will be announcing the notice in a timely manner.

The demonstration of voting process was attended by the UEC 

The officials from the UEC office and sub-UEC office in Nay Pyi Taw attended the demonstration of the voting process as MPs, polling station officers and election observers.

Likewise, the President Office, the State Counsellor Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the governmental staff acted as the eligible voters during the demonstration.
