Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) will consider whether it will accept the scrutiny of the Union Election Commission (UEC) only after its conference scheduled in late May, the party’s joint Secretary (1) U Sai Kyaw Nyunt told The Daily Eleven.
He made the remark in response to the question about his party’s stance over the UEC’s reply to agree on SNLD’s willingness to come under scrutiny at the place it chooses.
“We are going to hold our party conference. We will consider after it. For the time being, we are not considering anything,” said U Sai Kyaw Nyunt.
SNLD announced on May 24 that its conference, which is usually held once in three years, would take place on May 26 and 27.
The UEC is in the process of monitoring the membership strength of political parties in Myanmar and their accounts. According to the commission’s data, 83 parties have been inspected, and 10 others including the National League for Democracy and SNLD have yet to come under scrutiny.
There had been controversy between the UEC and SNLD over choice of venue for scrutiny. The former wanted to summon while the latter was willing to come under scrutiny at its headquarters.
The SNLD has told the media that it will not go to the place the UEC chose.
During a press conference on April 27, UEC member U Khin Maung Oo said the commission gave time to the political parties in consideration of circumstances although it has the duty and power to allow formation of parties and dissolve them in accord with the law.
He added that the NLD was also given a certain period of time because of some of its CEC members arrested and some going into hiding.
In March, the commission warned that the NLD and SNLD would have their party registrations suspended or face abolishment if they did not accept scrutiny.
