YANGON-----Plans are underway to install Smart Metres at City Taxi, according to the Yangon Region Public Transport Committee (YRTC).
It was carried out in accordance with the Systematic Running of Private Vehicle Rule which was enacted on June 18 of 2015.
According to the YRTC, a pilot project will be launched to install the Smart Metres at 500 city taxis operating in Yangon Region.
“The parliament of Yangon Region Government Committee enacted Systematic Running of Private Vehicle Rule in 2015. The Yangon Region Private Vehicle Supervisory Committee is now planning to fix the City Taxi’s fares and then the committee will report the plan to install the Smart Metres at the city taxi aiming to be become reasonable fares of city taxi to the Yangon Region Government Committee,” said the YRTC’s Joint Secretary.
It aims to ensure safe and reliable rides at reasonable fares. Priority will be given to CNG-installed taxis at Yangon International Airport, a YRTC official stated. Although the metre-system was used in taxis in the past, drivers made the meter run in advance to raise taxi fares. This time, 500 taxis will be fitted with the Smart Metres, according to the YRTC.
In Yangon Region, there were 65,000 vehicles that being registered as City Taxi.
