Six party members including Kyaw Kyaw Soe, the Chair of People’s Party for Mandalay Region, resigned as the party decided to attend the meeting between the new Union Election Commission (UEC) formed by the State Administration Council (SAC) and political parties arranged to meet on May 21, sources said.

The central executive committee members of the party held a meeting on May 17 to make the decision to attend the meeting arranged by the UEC and they resigned from the party duties as the CEC members decided to attend the meeting, said Kyaw Kyaw Soe.

“The new UEC was founded in the military regime era and our party didn’t attend the first meeting when we had been invited. Now we resigned as the party decided to attend the second meeting. I heard that the general secretary and a CEC member also resigned. Six party members of Mandalay Region including its chair, vice chair, a secretary and a party organizer quit. The party hasn’t announced anything yet,” he said.

Ye Naing Aung, secretary of the People’s Party and a CEC member resigned from their duties due to the decision to attend the meeting. Moreover, some officials of the party in Mandalay District also quit and all members of the party in Kyaukse resigned, sources said.

The party didn’t attend the first meeting arranged to meet between UEC and political parties during February.

The UEC invited all political parties including the National League for Democracy (NLD) party to attend the meeting and they had made seven decisions during the meeting held in February, said a UEC member in a press conference held by the press team of the SAC on May 15.
