SAC chairman halves sentence imposed on Thura U Aung Ko

It is reported that the chairman of State Administration Council (SAC) was pardoned half of the sentence imposed on Thura U Aung Ko.

The sentence ruled by the Supreme Court is halved by the SAC Chair, according to the Myanmar Gazette.

The sentence was halved on March 14, the day after Thura U Aung Ko was sentenced, according to the statement.

The SAC Chair halved the sentence under sub-section 1, Section 401 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

As a result, Thura U Aung Ko was sentenced to six years imprisonment with hard labor after his sentence was reduced by half.

Former Union Minister for Religion and Culture Thura U Aung Ko has been sentenced to 12 years in prison under Section 55 of the Anti-Corruption Law, according to the Ministry of Information.

According to the statement, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has formed an investigation team into the complaint of former Union Minister for Religion and Culture Thura U Aung Ko and they found that former Union Minister Thura U Aung Ko received blank checks worth 10 million in kyats and 30 million in kyats from the relevant persons in connection with the annual awarding of eight religious titles to individuals by the state, a Ford Everest Titanium car worth  K100.5 million from a businessman donated for long-term business convenience and accepted a gold plate weighing about 20 ticals without paying for it. He was charged under Section 55 of the Anti-Corruption Law in Yangon Region High Court on March 19, 2021.

Therefore, the Yangon Region High Court ruled on March 14, 2022 that Thura U Aung Ko was sentenced to 12 years in prison and a Ford Everest Titanium car, Ks10 million in cash and the gold plate were confiscated as state fund, according to the statement.
