Reports containing population figures and socio-economic data for Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Ayeyarwady and Bago regions, based on the 2024 national census, will be released, according to Union Minister for Immigration and Population U Myint Kyaing, who also serves as Chairman of the Central Census Commission.
He made the remarks during a workshop on the use of data from the 2024 Population and Housing Census held on March 10 at the Ministry of Immigration and Population in Nay Pyi Taw.
The Union Minister said that conducting a census is a very broad undertaking involving a large volume of work and significant costs. However, despite various difficulties and challenges, the 2024 Population and Housing Census was carried out out of necessity—not only to obtain accurate population statistics for assessing the country’s current situation and future development, but also because international practices require that a census be conducted once every ten years.
He added that identifying population figures by sector through the census would help provide basic resources for drafting and implementing policies related to those sectors, as well as support the training and development of the necessary workforce.
As a member of ASEAN, Myanmar will also be able to contribute national data to the ASEAN statistical sector and other international statistical frameworks. The census data can further support indicators for the Sustainable Development Goals and national indicator frameworks.
In addition, the population figures obtained from the census helped ensure the accuracy and completeness of voter lists, which form the most fundamental basis for the successful holding of the recent multi-party democratic general election.
The Union Minister also noted that census data must be analyzed and studied so that efforts can be made across different sectors to promote socio-economic development. Reports containing population and socio-economic information for Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Ayeyarwady and Bago regions will be released soon, and reports for the remaining regions and states will continue to be published.
Moreover, based on the data from the 2024 Population and Housing Census, further work will be carried out to estimate annual population figures. Therefore, the results and statistical data obtained from the 2024 census will be essential for formulating policies and development plans for the country. He urged surveyors, statisticians and data users to make effective use of these figures.
