Dawei- A 56-year-old Buddhist monk, hospitalized at the Dawei General Hospital on April 1 evening and passed away at the hospital with COVID-19 symptoms.
His body was cremated the following day.
The monk was from the upper Tizat monastery, Tizat village, Longlon Township, Dawei District. He visited Yangon within days and suffered high temperatures nd difficulties breathing when he arrived at his monastery. As his conditions worsen, he was hospitalized at the Longlon Hospital and was later sent to Dawei Hospital. Soon after, he passed away.
His remains were moved to Zahar cemetery by Dawei funeral service and Zabyu Thiri emergency team wearing PPE and cremated separately at the cemetery. The vehicle carried the remains of the monk was sprayed with disinfection.
In Tanintharyi Region, those coming back from abroad were given hospital quarantine and community-based facility quarantine. Till April 1, there is no one who died with COVID-19 but the monk was the first to be cremated while workers wore PPE suits. The nasal swab of the monk was taken and sent to Yangon for further examination. Close contact with the monk was also investigated and they will be put to complete contact quarantine according to Dr. Htwe Mya Soe, spokesperson of Tanintharyi Region’s Public Health Department.
The lists of those coming back from abroad in Tanintharyi Region till April 1 are 2287 in Dawei District, 1227 in Myeik District and 246 in Kawthaung District totaling 3760.(Translated by MAS)
