People’s Pioneer Party (PPP) and the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) are preparing to send a letter of opposition to the Union Election Commission over some irregularities in Dagon Township’s voter lists on which over 1400 voters have no national registration cards and exact home addresses, said PPP candidate Han Naing Oo for Dagon township.

He said in the voter lists of Yaw Mingyi Ward and Eastern Ward on Pyay Road, 1,393 voters did not mention their addresses exactly while 63 others were still applying for their NRC though they had gone to the polls on November 8.

He also expressed his doubt over the names of some voters who are still applying for NRCs and their father names that are similar to those in a neighbouring country.

“We will complain to the UEC about this,” said Han Naing Oo.

Under Section (4) of the parliamentary election law, a voter must show the exact NRC number and address, he pointed out.

Dagon Township USDP chairman Naing Win however said although they had heard such cases, security is still underway for confirmation.

Han Naing Oo said MPs Thet Thet Khaing and Kyaw Zeya are planning to raise questions in parliament over such cases.

Kyaw Zeya questioned the Township General Administration Department, Immigration Department and Election Sub-commission on November 18 whether those voters are still applying for NRCs and why there are delays.

Dagon Township Election Sub-commission chairperson May May Than explained that despite having no NRCs, voters can vote if they have driving licenses or student identity cards and that despite the application for NRCs still in the process, people can be on voter lists if their parents are Myanmar citizens.

In the 2020 general election held on November 8, all the three elected candidates in Dagon Township are from the ruling National League for Democracy.
