People’s Party (PP) and the National Unity Democratic Party (NUDP) will merge and register as a union level political party at the Union Election Commission (UEC), said leaders of both parties.

They revealed the information after the second meeting of PP’s central committee held at its headquarters at Yuzana Tower in Yangon on February 28.

PP chair U Ko Ko Gyi said: “There are different ideologies in Myanmar’s political culture. We rarely see unification in our political culture. Under such circumstances, U Sein Win’s party stands a famous party for its efforts to mainly address the farmland dispute for farmers. He has decided with difficulty believing that such a merger and cooperation will be more effective at a union level. We warmly welcome them.”

According the new party registration law, a party registration process must be carried out within 60 days.

“Under the new law, our party will become null and void if we fail to re-register in 60 days. My announcement today is that we will continue to stand as a political party so we have decided to re-register. Since its establishment, our party has been intended for the whole union. So we will register as a union level party,” Ko Ko Gyi added.

NUDP chair U Sein Win said his aim to merge and cooperate was to help strengthen PP.

The second meeting of PP’s central committee was held for two days on February 27 and 28. The statement on merger was issued after the meeting.
