A man in custody at Saipyin Police Station in Dabayin Township, Shwebo District, Sagaing Region, died after being tortured on December 29, advocate Bo Maung said.
According to the lawyer, police arrested four men during a festival in the township and only three of them were released the following day.
"At the festival, children were dancing. The police arrested four men as detainees. Three were released in the early morning. The relatives of another man under detention went to the police station and but they were denied meeting with him. That was on Saturday night. A doctor from Saipyin hospital said two policemen sent the man to the hospital. He had already been dead. The man's eyes were all in black with injuries. One eye was pierced. There was a cut on his chin. Two of his teeth were knocked out. He also got bruises in his occiput," said the lawyer who is dealing with the case.
The dead man was named Thein Win, aged 46, living in Dabayin Township. Some authorities reportedly visit the bereaved family and negotiated with them with cash assistance.
The lawyer, however, said his family did not accept the negotiation.
The police did not accept to open the case filed by the bereaved family but had launched an investigation.
