People’s Pioneer Party Chair Daw Thet Thet Khine Summoned for Questioning

It has been learned that Daw Thet Thet Khine, Chairperson of the People’s Pioneer Party, has been summoned for questioning.

According to a responsible official of the party, Daw Thet Thet Khine and a member of the party’s Central Committee were called in for questioning on the evening of January 13.

“She was only called in for questioning. We think it will be finished by this evening (January 14). That’s all. One person who was with her was also taken in,” a party official said.

Although reports have emerged that the questioning is related to her remarks about the election made to a local media outlet, the exact reason for the summons has not yet been confirmed.

Regarding this matter, some local media outlets have contacted government officials for clarification, but no official statement has been released so far.

It is understood that Daw Thet Thet Khine was previously disqualified as an election candidate due to an outstanding loan she had taken from Kanbawza Bank in connection with the 68 Residence housing project located at the corner of Kaba Aye Pagoda Road and Sayar San Road.

“The People’s Pioneer Party is one of the parties actively participating in the general election. If arrests or detention are carried out over remarks related to the election, it should be handled with caution, as the election is currently being closely observed by the international community. Arrests in such circumstances could undermine the credibility of the election. If there were any mistakes in statements related to the election, a warning should be sufficient. We also hope that she will be released shortly after the questioning,” a political observer commented.

Daw Thet Thet Khine had originally planned to contest in the election, but under the law issued by the Union Election Commission, she was not eligible to run.

For the 2025 election, the People’s Pioneer Party contested a total of 672 seats: 193 seats in the Pyithu Hluttaw, 145 seats in the Amyotha Hluttaw, 320 seats in Regional and State Hluttaws, and 14 seats in Ethnic Affairs Hluttaws.
