Rakhine political leader Dr Aye Maung, currently facing charges of high treason and public mischief, said Panglong (conference) played an important role in establishing a federal union during a court hearing on Monday.

"There are 37 points in the Panglong peace conference. They provide full sovereign power for all regions and states. We are referring to this. We will build a union in peaceful ways. Panglong is crucial for the establishment of a federal democratic state. If Panglong is successful, the constitution could be amended through cooperation between armed organizations, political parties and government. After the constitutional amendment, our country will become a federal democracy. Then, all regions and states will enjoy their rights. There will be state high court, government and parliament in Rakhine State," said Dr Aye Maung.

Dr Aye Maung and writer Wai Hin Aung were initially charged with high treason under Section 122 and conducting public mischief under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code and Section 17 (1) of the Unlawful Associations Act for allegedly making inflammatory remarks at a ceremony marking the fall of the Rakhine kingdom in Yathedaung on January 15 this year.

Wai Hin Aung was arrested on January 16 and Dr Aye Maung on January 18. Sittway Court ruled on September 10 that the charge under Section 17 (1) was dropped.

Dr Aye Maung is Lower House MP representing Ann Township Constituency in Rakhine State and former Arakan National Party leader.

Now, the Retreat of government, Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement signatory ethnic armed organizations to mark the third anniversary of signing the NCA is going on in Nay Pyi Taw.
