About 120 migrant workers stranded in Phukhet, Thailand, arrived back at Kawthaung and there are still over 500 migrant workers left stranded according to those working for Myanmar migrant workers.
Myanmar migrant workers reached Kawthaung to Ranaung by waterways on May 29. Authorities inspected the health check to them and sent them to respective quarantine places. But, there are many Myanmar migrant workers stranded in Thailand.
“Our education and development foundation was founded in the past 20 years and works for migrant workers’ affairs. Our bases are in Phuket and Phanam in southern Thailand. We are working together with other partner organizations. About 560 people are listed for coming back to Myanmar. Among them, there are 500 illegal workers. Majority of migrant workers are working in construction sites or tourism industries. As their works were closed due to COVID-19, they wanted to return home. They are the human resources of our country. It is very important to create job opportunities in our country,” said Moe Wai from the education and development foundation.
As a result of COVID-19, Myanmar migrant workers came back to their home land from Thailand and it is the 5th batch of their return. Authorities from both countries are discussing bringing back 560 migrant workers from Thailand.
