Officials from MEP and ROSATOM discuss to generate electricity from wind power, small hydropower and thermal energy, and to build a factory to produce lithium batteries for EVs

The meeting on the cooperation projects between the Ministry of Electric Power (MEP) and the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation "ROSATOM" of the Russian Federation was held on the afternoon of December 8 at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Electric Power Office No. (27), sources said.

In the meeting, the Union Minister for Electric Power, U Thaung Han, said that this meeting is a meeting between the ministry and ROSATOM in order to combine the needs for the cooperation projects and to combine the needs on the ground. It is also the result of the long-term cooperation between Russia and Myanmar with many years of friendship. During the 7th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) held in Vladivostok, Russia from September 5 to 8, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Electric Power and ROSATOM signed the "Road Map on Cooperation in the field of the use of Nuclear Energy for Peaceful Purposes for 2022-2023" on September 6.

In addition, during the trip to Russia during ATOMEXPO-2022 held in Sochi, the Russian Federation, the Department of Electric Power Planning under the ministry and the Rosatom Energy Projects, Joint Stock Company of the Russian Federation signed an agreement on November 21 to conduct a feasibility study for Russia-Myanmar Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Projects and also signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on November 22, and they are getting better results. The Ministry of Electric Power is implementing the policies established by the state for the development of the electricity sector, the Union Minister said.

In addition to this, we are discussing with the ROSATOM Company to participate with private investment to expand and invest, to build power plants, to develop small hydropower and renewable energy, and to implement wind power. We want to continue to improve on these discussions. We would like to invite to provide technical assistance and to cooperate in construction and investment. In order to carry out continuous improvements, field studies were also conducted on potential sites for the construction of wind power projects and areas for the implementation of small-scale hydropower in Myanmar yesterday, in addition to carrying out feasibility studies for the thermal power plant project and observing and discussing the initial sites where factories can be built, the Union Minister said.

Then, it is reported that the discussion continued in the afternoon according to the sectors such as the groups that will be implemented according to the project activities and to produce small hydropower, to produce renewable energy wind power, and to produce electricity using thermal energy and to build a factory to produce lithium batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) to be used in Myanmar.
