No plan to hold by-election before 2020 election: UEC spokesperson

There is no plan to hold by-election for vacant constituencies before the 2020 General Election, said Myint Naing, spokesperson of the Union Election Commission (UEC).

The UEC has designated the year 2019 as the voter list compilation year. Currently, the UEC is working on the compilation of voter lists for the 2020 General Election.

Recently, the UEC held a coordination meeting with the existing political parties in Nay Pyi Taw, for the 2020 General Election. 

In the time of the incumbent government, the UEC held the by-election for 19 vacant constituencies on April 1, 2017 and 13 vacant constituencies on November 3, 2018. 

After the by-election in 2018, MP Than Nyunt from Homalin Township Constituency-1 in Sagaing Region, Lower House MP Maung Thein Khaing from Sittwe Township in Rakhine State, MP Sai San Pe from Mongyal Township Constituency-2 in Shan State and Lower House MP Dr. Aye Kyu from Labutta Township Constituency in Ayeyawady Region, passed away. 

The lawmakers who passed away after the declaration of vacant constituencies for the 2018 by-election, are Lower House MP San San Ei from Moenyin Township Constituency in Kachin State, MP Tin Myint from Dagon Myothit (East) Constituency-2 in Yangon Region and Thein Swe, Shan State Minister for Electricity, Energy and Industry and Moemaik Township Constituency-2 in Shan State.

Currently, there are nine vacant constituencies including Lower House MP Dr. Aye Maung from Ann Township Constituency in Rakhine, who are serving his person term under the State defamation charge and Lower House MP Kyaw Myo Min from Bago Region, who faces the corruption charge.
