The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) will choose more than half of current MPs as candidates for the upcoming 2020 General Election, Dr. Myo Nyunt, Spokesperson of the NLD told the Daily Eleven.
Currently, the NLD is assessing the proficiency skills of current MPs for the selection of candidates for the 2020 General Election which is likely to take place in later this year. Most of current MPs will be included in the list of candidates as they already have five-year parliamentary experiences. This is the advantage of the MPs over the rest.
The NLD is less likely to choose the MPs who face actions taken under the party’s disciplines, low interactions with the public and weak cooperation among the party members. Currently, the NLD has not yet decided how many constituencies it will compete in. But it has a plan to run for the seats in every potential constituency which can guarantee sufficient number of candidates to form the government, he added.
The NLD topped the list of party candidates who ran for the parliamentary seats in 2015 General Election, with 1,152 candidates.
The NLD formed the government after winning most of parliamentary seats apart from some seats in Rakhine and Shan States.
The PACE conducted a survey titled “The Citizens’ Political Expectations for 2020” on over 2,900 people nationwide in early March, 2019. According to the PACE’s survey released on July, 2019, most of the respondents said they were unaware of the undertakings by the MPs. The number of respondents who have the optimistic views on the questions and answers by the MPs in parliament, the submission of bills, the MPs’ field trips to constituencies and development tasks, is a bit higher than those with negative views.
