The National League for Democracy's Central Executive Committee held a meeting at the party headquarters in Yangon on October 25, and the procedures for selecting parliamentary candidates to run for 2020 general election were approved, NLD spokesperson Dr Myo Nyunt said.

According to the policy approved by the meeting, town elders supporting the NLD has the right to choose candidates.

"They (town elders) must be the ones who have been supporting NLD since 1988 or 1990 or 2012 or 2015. They must not be NLD executive members. We will choose town elders," said Dr Myo Nyunt.

This policy was also practised in 1990 elections.

"What is different from 1990 is we will set criteria for choosing town elders" he added.

During a tripartite meeting involving Yangon Region NLD, parliament and government held on October 24, NLD Vice Chairman (2) Dr Zaw Myint Maung said the party's policy for selecting parliamentary candidates would be publicized in due course, some parliamentary representative quoted him as saying.

During the meeting, Dr Zaw Myint Maung also warned that people will no longer vote in coming general election in the interests of a party as they have improved their political awareness.

Although NLD has not confirmed how many constituencies it will compete in coming general election, it leaders have said they will try to win to be able to form a government.
