A riot broke out at Myitkyina Prison in Kachin State on April 18 and some inmates were reportedly killed and injured in the incident, sources said.

The shouting started at around 4 pm on April 18, and after a while, the disturbance became louder. The security forces fired bullets into the air, but the shouting did not stop. Security vehicles arrived, used long range acoustic devices and they heard gunshots, according to a person nearby the incident.

“It will all take about half an hour. At about 4:05 pm, I heard shouting. I heard they shouted “Justice is our concern”. The guards fired bullets into the air. Security cars entered. They used long range acoustic devices. After a while, they started shooting. It calmed down at about 4:30 pm. At 7 pm, they shouted again. And it was quiet. We also saw ambulances. Now the roads in front of the prison are closed," he said.

It was initially known that the main cause of the unrest was the demand for unfairness in the granting of amnesties, while other demands were not known.

On April 17, on the first day of the Myanmar New Year, 42 people were released from Myitkyina Prison. A total of four prisoners, including two from Myitkyina, one from Bhamo and one from Mohnyin, were killed and eight were injured, and the injured inmates are receiving medical treatment, according to reports.

Regarding the above incident, there is no news released by the information team of the State Administration Council, but if it is confirmed, it will be disclosed further.

In 2019, riot broke out at Myitkyina Prison on May 10 under the pretext of not getting equal parole.

At that time, riots also broke out in Shwebo, Myitkyina, Tharawady and Pathein prisons, and four inmates from Shwebo prison died in the riot.
